Montana hosts international thermophiles conference Sept. 11-16

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug corsa 29, 2011 - Approximately 250 scientists from all over the world will gather at Big Sky Sept. 11 through 16 to discuss their discoveries and progress in re ferrari search about organisms that live in hot springs and other extreme environments.

Hosted by Montana State University, the 11th annual Thermophiles Conference will focus on three main areas: viruses; genomics and metagenomics; and evolution, ecology and biogeochemical processes.

Among the keynote speakers will be John Peters, director of MSU's Thermal Biology Institute. He will discuss geology and microbiology in Yellowstone National Park.  Christie Hendrix, research permit facilitator at the Yellowstone Center for Resources, will discuss research in rc helicopter and car market place Yellowstone.

According to organizers, the conference is being held at Big Sky for two reasons – the reputation of TBI researchers and the proximity of Yellowstone National Park.  Yellowstone is the birth place of thermophile research and a special draw for many scientists, especially international researchers, said Heather Rauser, Peters' assistant.

"Yellowstone is a beautiful and unique natural environment from which so much exciting science emerged," Rauser added. "This research impacts many areas in applied science, including medicine, bioenergy, industrial biofeuling and energy efficiency, nove bmw l biomaterials, bioremediation, and extremophilic systems biology."

This will be the first time the annual thermophile conference has been held in Montana and the second time in the United States. The researchers first gathered in Italy in 1990. NVision Scanner Helps Reverse Engineer Key Impellor at Hydroelectric Plant

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 26, 2011 - Engineers from NVision, Inc., using the company's HandHeld Scanner, were able to quickly reverse engineer a large impellor for a major hydroelectric facility, sparing the facility what would have been an extended shutdown had they needed to produce a replacement impellor from scratch. In less than one week, NVision scanned the original impellor and provided a computer model of it to the facility, which then used the model to manufacture a duplicate impellor for installation. In the end, only a relatively short shutdown was necessary to accommodate the scanning and reproduction of the impellor.    

The turbines that move the water in hydroelectric plants employ massive impellors to get the job done. In this case, one of the facility's key impellors had suffered damage that forced the facility t auto part o replace it. However, the facility did not possess a computer model of the impellor, which was necessary in order to manufacture a replacement. Without a replacement available, the plant was facing an extended shutdown with potentially high losses in time and money.

The facility's management contacted NVision to produce a computer model of the impellor. Two days after the initial contact, with a refurbished impellor temporarily in rc helicopter and car market place use as a replacement, an NVision engineer was on site to scan the impellor using the HandHeld laser scanner.

The HandHeld scanner is attached to a mechanical arm which moves about the object being scanned, freeing the user to capture data rapidly and with a high degree of resolution. An optional tripod provides complete portability in the field. Intuitive software buick allows full model editing, polygon reduction, and data output to all standard 3D packages.

"The HandHeld laser scanner was perfect for this project because its ability to move freely around a part makes it possible to reverse engineer components of virtually any size and shape," said Colin Ellis, Engineering Manager at NVision. "In this case, the spacing of the blades was large enough for the laser scanning head t dodge o fit through."

Scanning took eight hours, and included data from three locations situated throughout the part, with data being indexed into the same coordinate system using geometric features. After the data was collected and processed into an STL mesh, a SolidWorks model was created in two days. The facility received the completed model of the impellor just six working days after first calling NVision with their problem. The computer model was used to manufacture an exact duplicate of the original impellor.

"By using laser scanning to reverse engineer the impellor the facility was able to avoid a lengthy and costly shutdown," said Ellis. "As a side benefit of the scanning, we found that the impellor being used as a replacement was greatly out of balance, with no easy way of manually checking the part to see where the problem lay. Fortunately, using our inspection software, we were able to rotate and compare the data virtually, allowing precise indication of problem areas."

UK Oil Industry Confidence Increases Despite Tax Increases

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 26, 2011 - The outlook of firms drilling oil in Britain has improved in the second quarter of 2011 from the previous three months, as shown in data produced by Oil & Gas UK on Wednesday. The industry body has commented however that confidence remains fragile in the wake of a tax increase that was announced earlier in March. The £2 billion tax was set to fund a cut in fuel duty following a huge increase in global oil prices.

Oil & Gas UK has said that overall industry confidence increased modestly from 51 to 54 points. The industry confidence index measures a variety of economic indicators and gauges overall industry confidence on a 100-point scale. The Oil and Gas UK ranking shows a dramatically improved corsa outlook whereas a rating below 50 represents a very negative viewpoint.

Confidence in the oil industry (http://www.claxtonengineering.com/) fell by 12 points on a quarterly basis in May following the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne's decision to impose the tax rise. This increased the state's take on oil drilling and gas profits to 32% from 20% overnight.

Ken Cruickshank, Oil & Gas U.K.'s supply chain manager, said that while confidence had improved among the majors, the outlook among independent operators had dropped further. OEMs to Ride on Platform Standardisation and Modular Strategy, Finds Frost & Sullivan

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 23, 2011 - By 2020 the key 12 global auto OEM groups are expected to reduce their platforms from 223 in 2010 to 154, reveals news analysis by global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. The adoption of a global platform standardisation and modular strategy is put in place in order to reach a platform reduction of more than 30 per cent. The top ten platforms will result in a growth from nearly 17 million vehicles in 2010 to more than 33 million by 2020 in the global passenger car and light truck production figures, featuring a staggering increase of 94 per cent. Consequently, by 2020 the key 12 OEM groups are expected to account for an almost 74 per cent share in the same segment.

"With more than 95 per cent of its total vehicle production by 2020 targeted from just three platforms each, Volkswagen group in the volume segment and Daimler group in the luxury segment globally are expected to have the highest degree of platform standardisation and widest range of vehicle models on a single platform," says Partner and Practice Director, Sarwant Singh, from Frost & Sullivan. "Volkswagen group is expected to surpass the current frontrunner, Ford group, with its modular toolkit strategy. The German carmaker will produce increased numbers of models and their respective volumes per platform, while efficiently integrating new and innovative technologies."

The standardisation of platforms is expected to impact the OEM group brands with their vehicle model permutations and combinations look leaner than ever before. By 2020, Daimler, Volkswagen and the Fiat-Chrysler groups respectively, are expected to reduce 60-65 per cent of their platforms. As a result, their average production volume per platform is expected to increase more than four-fold by 2020 compared to 2010. Overall, the average vehicle production per platform is expected to increase at least three fold by 2020 from current levels of more than 0.24 million units in 2010. And, nine out of the top ten platforms are expected to have volumes in excess of two million units annually by 2020 as against three out of the top ten in 2010.

"Emerging Asian economies will certainly be driving platform standardi auto part sation and modular approach over Europe and North America," explains Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Vishwas Shankar. "India and China are major drivers themselves for OEMs to strongly adopt platform standardisation strategy. Approximately 160 of the 800 discrete models to be manufactured and sold globally by top 12 OEM groups between 2010 and 2020 are expected to be manufactured - and also ideally sold - in China, in comparison to 140 dis chevrolet crete models for the United States."

"More than 24 of these 800 discrete models, or approximately three per cent, are global vehicle models and expected to be manufactured and ideally sold in both China and the Unites States," he continues. "This clearly shows the focus on emerging economies as key to growth."

The study also identified several factors for OEMs to derive a blueprint of their platform standardisation strategy. The emerging regions in which the OEMs operate, both produce and sell, and which directly govern their platform standardisation and modular strategy, are certainly one. Another factor is the modules themselves used as building blocks of future platforms, and OEMs are expected to bring variations into the vehicle through effective use of electronics. And finally, there is the ability of the OEM groups to quickly understand the perceived benefits gained by having a reduced supplier base as a result of sharing components, systems and modules across platforms.

It's all very well having a mass of information on various distances, angles, and speeds, but interpreting this information usefully is often difficult. As development of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) becomes more commonplace, the methods used to develop vehicle separation systems become more advanced, leading to a need for methods that can manipulate data usably and intuitively.

Responding to this, Racelogic have developed simple to use, dedicated vehicle separation functionality for its industry proven VBOX 3, which affords ADAS developers the capability to verify the accuracy of their systems effectively. Real-time vehicle separation data can be viewed in the local vehicle whilst being logged for analysis; and can also be transmitted via CAN for use by third-party systems.

This feature enable acura s the information to be seen in a more meaningful way, and by connecting a Video VBOX to the system it is even possible to observe vehicle and driver behaviour integrated with the data in a real environment. Using the CAN output, the vehicle separation data can be graphically overlaid over video, in real-time. The actions of driver, vehicles, and external environment can be monitored alongside GPS information which is invaluable in test analysis.

We are often asked how the GPS data can be accurate enough to reliably report the (usually small) distance between two cars. This is possible because in addition to receiving frequencies from American GPS, the Racelogic system picks up Russian GLONASS satellites, which are numerous and very reliable. Infiniti of Denver's Efficient Lighting

The offices, common areas and service bays areas were converted from T12 to T8 lamps with NEMA high efficiency ballasts, resulting in watt savings averaging 50%.  

The showroom and lot lights were converted to induction lamps, which lowered the wattage per fixture from 1075 watts to 300 watts, a 70% e alfa romeo nergy savings.
